Orange/red lipstick picks: Tom Ford & Revlon

I've got something for both the luxe lovers and the bargainistas today!  A return performance by Tom Ford's Wild Ginger alongside a similarly lovely (and much less expensive - yay!) lipstick from the drugstore darling Revlon - Kiss Me Coral.  I've been alternating wearing both lately to add some colour to my face and ward off the winter blues, so I wanted to share the love on my blog...

L - R:
Revlon - Kiss Me Coral
Tom Ford - Wild Ginger

I was originally going to call this a dupes post but while these two lovely orange/red or poppy red lipsticks are in the same colour family and look very close in the tube I think they're just distinct enough from each other to say they are NOT dupes.

Lets have another look at the bullets next to each other.  Pretty close, huh?  Yessss, I'm still (stupidly) trying to preserve the TF stamp on the Tom Ford.  That's the problem with expensive lipsticks and expensive cosmetics in general - you treat them a little too preciously - at least I do!  Next time I promise I'll bite the bullet (pardon the poor pun) and swipe that Tom Ford on with gusto!

The swatch is where the difference in colour becomes apparent.  Kiss Me Coral has a more distinct orange tone to it and it's just a touch lighter than Wild Ginger.  FYI although it doesn't show in my pictures there is a significant difference in the coverage - I had to build up the colour of the Revlon swatch with three swipes to get intense coverage, whereas TF is deeply pigmented in one swipe:

Wild Ginger

Yes, I love the colour of both these lipsticks and could wear them interchangeably - and yet still confidently declare them different!

What do you think? Dupes or different?

Have a great weekend everybody!

Vita :)

  1. Definitely different enough to warrant owning BOTH of them. I'm yet to buy a TF lippy... got my eye on the Coral one. Maybe I'll treat myself after the bubba's born. :-)

    1. What a lovely idea - I think you can justify a TF as a special treat! Not long to go now :) xo

    1. Two's my total at the moment - the first one I self-gifted for my birthday last year, the second my husband bought for me (clever man!).

  3. They are both so beautiful! I can't bring myself to buy TF, I fear that once I start I wouldn't be able to stop. Having said that, Revlon is darn expensive in Aus anyway,so I generally head to Myer anyway;P

    1. TF lipsticks are luxury in a tube but I think the price would keep your urges in check. Perhaps treat yourself to one for a special occasion?

  5. I love Revlon products... their lipsticks are so nice! I have Siren best orange/coral ever.. which reminds me I need a backup since they tend to take colors away :-P

    1. I know what you mean about Revlon discontinuing shades. I can't find Cherries in the Snow any more and a whole lot of girls have been blogging about Revlon discontinuing Melonade (another awesome orange) down here recently. I've seen and swatched Siren. I might just add it to my lipstick shopping list once my ban's done! Thanks for reminding me about that one Iris! xo

  6. I'd say they're definitely different, too, especially if they swatch that way on lips! I think I prefer the TF shade...of course!

    1. Larie the luxe lover! You're the one guilty of starting 1000 luxe lemmings for me, haha! You know I'm gonna check the Christian Dior lip glosses after I have my Chanel in my hot little hand :)

  7. Oh, the Revlon is definitely orange and the TF is a red. Is it weird that I'm drawn to the Revlon more? If I had a TF lipstick, I think it'll just sit on a display behind a glass window. :)

    1. Not weird at all - I love Revlon lipsticks! I know what you mean about luxe stuff - I'm always so precious about it that I need to remind myself it's actually OKAY to use it after all!!!

  8. Mmm, both look so lovely and creamy! I think the Tom Ford one reminds me more of MAC Lady Danger lipstick, though I bet if you swatched them side by side then Lady Danger would somehow look pure red, haha.

One day I'll treat myself to a Tom Ford lipstick...just have to think of a special occasion or reason first :P

    1. For a special occasion absolutely! That's how I justify owning TF lipsticks - I can't afford them as an impulse purchase!

  9. Definitely different! Both gorgeous shades nonetheless! And I have the same dilemma with expensive lipsticks. I have yet to wear my Burberry lippie, the pattern on the bullet is just so pretty!

    1. I know it's a double edged sword with luxe packaged cosmetics. It's the beauty of the presentation that draws you in - then it's that same beauty you don't want to disturb!
