EOTD: ModelCo Island Fever trio palette

I've been playing it safe with eye looks lately so I haven't done anything post-worthy for a while but finally(!) I've broken out of my neutral rut.  I got an interesting eyeshadow trio from Australian beauty brand ModelCo in a promotional show bag I bought at the Royal Melbourne Show last year and now I've decided to break it out of its box and play with some serious colour on my eyes!

As this look is based almost entirely on the ModelCo Eyeshadow Trio palette in Island Fever I've taken the opportunity to do a mini review of this palette before getting into the details of my EOTD look.

 Island Fever

The Island Fever palette is made up of a colourful combination of two shimmers and a darker matte shade. From left these are:  Costa Rica (a neutral beige shimmer which is something I personally can't be without in my makeup collection), Positano (a vivid turquoise shimmer which was the shade I was the most intrigued by and I guess nervous about) and Tahiti (described as matte midnight navy, perfect for use as a liner or to create a deep blue smokey eye).  You can see how the interesting mix of shades offers the choice of playing it safe and neutral with a just a hint of colour accent or going all out with a deep, yet vivid smokey eye.

When doing the initial swatching I was impressed with the smooth application of these shadows, the lack of fallout and the depth of pigment, particularly that of matte Tahiti.  These swatches are two swipes on bare skin.

Swatched from top:
Costa Rica, Positano, Tahiti

My play it safe instincts would have me immediately going for a neutral beige eye using the dark matte shade as a coloured liner but I opted to make Positano the focus of my look, and applied it all over my lids while incorporating the other two shades for highlight and definition.  It's not something I'd automatically choose to wear but I did like the way the turquoise Positano seemed to brighten my eyes:

What I applied and where:
  • Bloom Eye Base blended all over lid and crease
  • Positano brushed all over lid and blended in crease. I also used it as a coloured liner on the inner third of the lower lash line
  • Costa Rica on inner corner of lids and brushed lightly over browbones
  • Tahiti on outer corners of lids and outer lower lash line
  • Mirenesse Tight Liner Hydra Gel Eye Liner (Caviar Black) drawn all along the upper lash line for definition, with Tahiti applied over it with a pencil brush to soften the line
  • Bourjois Volume Glamour Ultra Curl Mascara (Black) on upper lashes and outer lower lashes

Have you tried ModelCo products?

EOTD: Satellite Dreaming Rock Chick

I can't believe it's been two months since my last EOTD.  Time's been streaking by especially over the last month.  As evidence of that I actually took these photos probably a month ago too and have only got around to doing the post now.  Onto my 'Satellite Dreaming Rock Chick' look, inspired by MAC's purple Satellite Dreams eyeshadow and loads of black liner and mascara.

I haven't worn eyeliner on the waterline for years - probably not since my 20's yikes! - and I was in the mood to experiment with my Urban Decay 24/7 liners. Whoa Nelly!  It's such a different look for me and it changes the appearance of my eyes drastically. Black liner on the waterline and outer lower lash line, along with loads of mascara makes it all about unapologetically emphasizing the eyes.  They look so much more intense - and just a little more "rock chick" maybe?

Apologies for the unruly, uncombed eyebrows - I didn't notice until after I'd uploaded the pictures...

What I applied and where:
  • MAC Satellite Dreams brushed over lids and on outer lower lash lines
  • MAC Shale on outer corners
  • MAC Phloof! on inner corners of the lids
  • Urban Decay Ransom on outer upper lashline
  • MAC Deep Truth blended out over Ransom
  • Urban Decay Perversion on lower waterlines and outer bottom lashlines
  • Several coats of black Diorshow mascara on upper lashes (I personally avoid mascara on my lower lashes because it gives me a 60's Twiggy look and that's not what I was aiming for here!)

Shades used clockwise from left:
Urban Decay 24/7 liner -Ransom
Urban Decay 24/7 liner - Perversion
MAC - Phloof!
MAC - Shale
MAC - Deep Truth
MAC - Satellite Dreams

Have you tried wearing eyeliner on your waterline?

That's all for now.

EOTD: Trying out teal

The weekend's here so it's time for a splash of colour!

A few weeks ago a few of us were tweeting about wearing colour and agreed to wear teal eye looks on the same day as a bit of a Twitter dare.  I liked my teal EOTD enough to replicate it and I decided to turn up the teal even more using a matching teal eyeliner pencil to anchor the look.  It's a bit more colourful than I wear in my everyday, 8 to 5 life but I really loved doing and wearing this one - I hope you enjoy it too!

What I applied and where:
  • Essence Mystic Lemon in inner half of lid
  • theBalm Open To Offers Olwen on outer half of lid
  • MAC Tempting blended into crease
  • Essence Cappucino, Please blended just above crease
  • Urban Decay Junkie along upper lash line
  • Diorshow mascara (black) on upper lashes

Shades used clockwise from top left:
Essence holographic effect - 43 Mystic Lemon
theBalm shadow/liner - Open to Offers Olwen
Essence shimmer effect - 58 Cappucino, please!
Urban Decay - 24/7 Glide-on Eye Pencil - Junkie
MAC Lustre - Tempting

Are you a teal fan too?

That's it for now.

EOTD: Blue accent

I wore a blue EOTD to a bloggers' meetup lunch a few weekends ago (already?!?) and I snapped some pictures before I headed out the door.  It was a day of beauty shopping and swapping and will be in an upcoming post. This look was inspired by my sadly unfulfilled obsession with Chanel's Blue Illusion de Chanel collection currently available only at the Chanel boutique.  I dug around for anything and everything I had in blue eyeshadow and this was the result.  I was surprised that rather than overpowering my green eyes, these blue shades somehow made my eyes appear greener and, always a bonus, my hubs loved it too...

Shades used L - R:
Skin Food Sugar Dessert Shadow - 16
MAC Frost - Deep Truth
Revlon Colorstay 12 Hour Eyeshadow quad - 18 Azure Mist (discontinued)

What I applied and where:
  • Face of Australia primer (matte) blended over the lids
  • Baby blue shade from Revlon quad all over lid up to crease
  • MAC Powerpoint Pencil (Bordeauxline) on outer upper and lower lash lines
  • MAC (Deep Truth) on outer V and lower lash line
  • Pale lavender shade from Revlon quad blended in crease
  • Skinfood (16) on centre of lids to add shimmer
  • Diorshow mascara (black) on upper lashes

This look is a wee bit out of my colour comfort zone but was fun to wear and I've decided that blue actually can be worn as part of a daytime look.  If Chanel can do it this spring then why can't I?

How do you like to work colour into your daytime eye looks?

That's it for tonight.

EOTD: Inspired by a NOTD...

 Hello Lovelies

This EOTD was an experiment inspired by my current manicure (of all things)!  I wondered if the complimentary combination of gold and lilac would translate as well on my eyes as it did on my nails?  This was the rather bright eyed result using a lovely lilac shadow from Essence as the feature colour.  Again these pastels make me think of spring...

This look was very simple and consisted of just two eyeshadow shades and defined with a gold liner pencil.  I'd originally tried the look with a primer underneath but didn't like the too bright result so applied my colours over bare lids for a softer and easier to wear, everyday wash of colour:

L - R and swatched in the same order:
 MAC Powerpoint - Handforged
Excel - GL01
Essence - Go Glam

So, I applied:
  • Excel GL01 - on the inner thirds of my lids
  • Essence Go Glam - on the outer two thirds of the lids and blended up to the crease
  • MAC Powerpoint Pencil (Handforged) on upper and lower lash lines
  • Diorshow Mascara (090 Black) on the upper lashes only

Too easy!  Until next time.

EOTD: Winter sunset...

Hello and a happy Thursday to you all :)

This post is to share an EOTD I created using all four new MAC eyeshadows I hauled recently ( here ).  Originally I wasn't sure how the combination of warm coppers and bronzes would work alongside cool lilac but then I thought of the colours of the sunset and it inspired me to do this...

I ended up using the following six shades to achieve the multi-tonal look - mostly MAC plus a shimmery gold Japanese shadow thrown in for an extra glint on the lids...

Top Row L-R:
MAC - Idol Eyes, Woodwinked, Coppering, Carbonized
Bottom Row L-R:
Excel - GL01, MAC Shroom

What I applied (and where):
  • Bloom Eye Base all over lid and crease
  • MAC Idol Eyes - on inner third of lid
  • MAC Woodwinked - on outer two-thirds of lid
  • MAC Carbonized - on outer crease and V
  • MAC Coppering - on inner third of crease
  • Excel GL01 - on middle of lid
  • MAC Shroom to blend out crease
  • MAC Powerpoint Pencil (Bordeauxline) on upper and lower lash lines
  • Rimmel Volume Flash x 10 Mascara (Black) on upper lashes only

Do you like mixing cool and warm colours in your makeup?

Thanks again for looking!

Soft Grey EOTD: Essence, Bloom & Maybelline

Winter has come early down here and I was really feeling it on the day I did this EOTD.  It's all about variations on the grey theme and the result was a soft dove-grey daytime eye.   I deliberately avoided my go to MAC shadows and used some of my more cheap and cheerful products to create this soft, almost sleepy look.  Everything about it is dusty and muted.  It's just me with a bit of contouring I guess...

L-R:
Essence - Dance All Night
Bloom - Platinum
Maybelline - Charcoal Smokes palette

To get this look I applied:
  • Essence (Dance All Night) - all over the lid
  • Bloom (Platinum) - blended into the crease
  • Maybelline Charcoal Smokes crease shade (upper right of palette) - on the outer V and on lower lash line
  • MAC Powerpoint Pencil (Duck) on outer upper lash line
  • Rimmel Volume Flash x 10 Mascara (Black) on upper lashes only
The colours look especially soft and sheer as I didn't use an eye primer or base.

Thanks for looking.

EOTD: Gold with a violet lining...

Cripes, I really can't think of any punchy imaginative titles for these posts! Forgive me - I know why I'll never succeed in advertising.

Anyway, this was a ridiculously easy, slightly glam gilt-eyed look I wore not so long ago.  No tricky blending here.  It was a wash of sparkly coppery gold over the lid, a brow highlight, some colourful contrasting liner and I was good to go!  I don't know what was happening with my eyebrows - I have straight hair but my brows have a mind of their own here...

 What I used:
  • Face of Australia primer (matte) blended over the lids
  • L'Oreal Sepia Sparkle brushed all over lid up to crease
  • MAC Shroom on browbone
  • Urban Decay 24/7 liner (Ransom) on upper and lower lash lines (I can't get enough of this violet liner!)
  • Napoleon - Whole Lotta Lash mascara (black) on upper lashes only
Too easy!

EOTD: Purple peacock

It was bitterly cold and rainy on this ANZAC Day holiday.  We were all cosy indoors so I had some time to play with colour.  I decided to do a wearable green and purple combination using mostly MAC shades with a little Red Earth and Urban Decay thrown in.

What I used (and where!):
  • Face of Australia primer (matte) blended over the lids
  • Red Earth After Eight on outer third of lid and blended to outer V
  • MAC Vex on inner lids
  • MAC Shale on crease
  • MAC Shroom blended on browbone
  • Urban Decay 24/7 liner (Ransom) on upper and lower lash lines
  • Napoleon - Whole Lotta Lash mascara (black) on upper lashes only
 Thanks for looking!
