Singapore beauty haul 2015 part 1: The drugstore edition

If you follow me on Instagram you'd probably know that a Singapore beauty haul post was in the works - I'm sorry for keeping you waiting so long! I initially decided to split the haul into two posts starting with the drugstore items first, but to be honest I'm now strongly considering doing this in three posts because I did quite a bit of hauling from Korean green beauty brand Innisfree and I don't want to overwhelm anyone - including myself.  

Okay, so I'll start off small(ish) with the drugstore haul. For the sake of splitting the load I've also included one brand, Missha, that isn't strictly drugstore but I don't consider it a high end department store brand either so the drugstore category was the best fit.  Right, so without further ado I've sorted most of this post out by brand...

Catrice

Catrice is one drugstore brand I've been curious about for a few years now.  While Catrice's more youth-oriented "sister" brand Essence has been available in Australia for the last 5 years or so, we've yet to see the more sophisticated Catrice line widely available - if available at all -  down here.  For the most part I've been a fan of Essence as providing great quality at a very low price point so I jumped at the chance to grab some Catrice items when I spotted the stand at a Guardian drugstore.  My one regret is that I didn't buy any of their lipsticks.  Having done my research after returning I've read that Catrice Ultimate Colour Lipsticks are well pigmented and very long lasting compared to their Essence counterparts.

Being new to the brand I made some very safe and neutral choices. Starting from the top:

• Absolute Eye Colour Monos - I chose two matte shades to be worn either together or alone, going for taupe (350 Starlight Espresso), and beige (870 On The Taupe Of The Matt Everest).  Initial swatches on the back of the hand are promising as these don't feel as chalky as Essence mattes have been in my experience so I'm looking forward to wearing them.

• Illuminating Blush (010 I Am Nuts About You) - This line of blushes looked so pretty and I went for what might have seemed the most 'boring' choice but, fear not, this produces the most luminous peachy glow with just a little bit of sparkle - I'm swatching as I write and getting pretty excited about this blush!

• Defining Blush (020 Rose Royce) - I am now kicking myself just a little for not choosing at least one pink blush from this line because Rose Royce is effectively another peach, although this is a more subdued and natural matte version for everyday.

• Re-Touch Light-Reflecting Concealer (005 Light Nude) - I can't resist my highlighting pens! I'll throw this into my makeup bag as soon as I'm done with my current Maybelline highlighting concealer.

• Ultimate Nail Lacquer (66 Blue And A Half Men) - This polish caught my eye as it looks like the kind of blue that's popping up everywhere this season.

Silkygirl

I made one repurchase and a few extras from this brand:

• Moisture Rich Lipstick Lipstick (Limited Edition 01) - I rationally know I don't need another red lipstick but I was a little seduced by the shiny silver bullet and the lightweight and glossy lippy formula when I tried it in the store.

• Moisture Smooth Lipstick (06 Juicy Pink) - Juicy Pink is another lightweight, buildable lip colour in a warm, medium toned - you guessed it - pink.  Spring influenced my decision here! 

• Magic BB Powder Foundation (01 Ivory) - Of course I bought another pan of my favourite BB powder because this covers and mattifies like no other I've tried so far.  It's ready and waiting in the wings for summer.

Missha

I found a Missha store near my closest train station and there were some items 70% off so I indulged just a little buying these few items:

• Signature Glam Art Triple Lips SPF 10 (TVL01) - This liquid lip colour can apparently be layered and built up from a tint to a full glossy lipstick in three coats.  What can I say? I was intrigued and I'm wondering if it's going to be a Korean version of YSL's Glossy Stains. TVL01 is a very nondescript label for the vibrant raspberry pink you can see peeking through the side of the tube.

• The Style Lucid Nail Polish (VL01) - A violet-pink cream nail colour that will be gracing my fingers and toes as the weather warms up. Say no more.

A few Sasa picks

In times gone by I may not have shown such restraint in a Sasa store but I kept it very contained this time around.  Normally I'd buy loads of sheet masks etc but I'd already bought some from Innisfree so I just got a couple of colour cosmetics:

• Wet n Wild Coloricon Eye Shadow Palette (The Naked Truth) - Neutrals again! I remember overlooking this very palette in Hawaii last year so I snapped it up without hesitation this time. I'm sure there's nothing wrong with having 50 variations of beige and brown...

• Gosh Cosmetics Natural Blush (43 Flower Power) - This is such a pretty peachy-pink blush that blends like silk.  I've heard great things about Gosh blushes so now I'll find out for myself if the hype is justified.

Missha The Style Crystal Nail Polish: JBR01

I was digging around for something not purple (or red or blue...) to wear on my nails when I found an interesting little gem from Missha worth swatching.  JBR01 - Can I call this something more interesting like, say, Jackie Brown? -  is the name of today's featured polish from Korean brand Missha's The Style Crystal Nail Polish collection.

According to Missha's official website these polishes actually contain "...little crystal pearls [to] make your nails sparkle..." and are rose scented (I can't say that my nostrils noticed that!)  'Jackie Brown' is a milk chocolate shimmer polish, subtly glinting with holographic micro-glitter.  I applied two coats and omitted top coat so as not to diminish the holo effect however it still appeared on the subtle side in most light and unfortunately the sun wasn't around when I did my nails so...  I couldn't capture the full rainbow holo sparkle here.  Oh well *sigh*.

Missha The Style Lucid Nail Polish - CR03

So...after another internet-related hiccup I'm back again!  I've got a load of backlogged posts to get onto so let's kick off with a quickie nail polish post which should suit both the Northern and Southern hemispheres.

Unfortunately Missha don't get descriptive with their shade names so this nail polish is simply known as CR03.  My guess is maybe CR stands for cream(?) because this is a Spring/Summer/Autumn appropriate cream polish - a flattering pink-toned peach with a hint of pearly sheen that glints subtly in the sunlight.  Missha polishes have huge flat brushes which make for quick coverage although I had to take a bit of extra care as the formula was a little on gluggy side.  With super careful application I'd say this could be a one-coater but I found I needed two for a perfectly smooth veneer.

February's farewelled products (2013 edition)

It's a little late coming but these are the products I said goodbye to last month. Without further ado...

Skin care

8) Olay Regenerist Thermal Skin Polisher (125ml) - Once I realized this wasn't a daily cleanser (I suffered from a sensitive skin episode from OVER exfoliating!) and used it a few times a week I found this was really effective in smoothing my skin.  The polish feels warm on the skin once it's activated with water and the micro-crystal granules do the physical exfoliation.  Good stuff - as long as you don't use it every day!

9) Natio Lift Skin Firming Serum (50ml/1.6 fl.oz) - I generally love Natio's products so I'm a little sad that I was underwhelmed by this serum.  It was a rather watery formula which would literally run off my skin if I wasn't quick enough to rub it in.  I can't say I noticed it did anything magical for my skin either other than add a little extra moisture.  I'm glad I picked this up at last year's warehouse sale and didn't pay full price.

10) Natio Facial Cleansing Gel (100g/3.52oz) - OK, I didn't love the serum but I did love this gentle cleanser.  It's a very refreshing green tea and cucumber gel that smelt fresh, gently cleansed the skin and rinsed off in an instant.  This was a lovely alternative to my preferred foaming cleansers and as it's pH neutral it can be used morning, noon and night - not literally of course! Well, morning and night anyway.

11) Missha The Style Lip & Eye Makeup Remover (100ml approx.) - I bought this a few months ago when I last stepped into a Missha store.  It's the same gentle, non stinging, dual-phase remover that I'm devoted to (shake it up, soak a cotton pad and gently wipe off waterproof eye makeup or long lasting lip makeup) and it was in a nifty spill-proof bottle.  I would certainly use this again.

12) Swisspers Naturals Aloe Skin Perfecting Facial Cleansing Wipes (25 wipes) - As far as wipes go these ticked all the boxes:  not too small, softly textured cloths with just enough product to cleanse thoroughly, and they were enriched with aloe vera so my skin felt comfortably clean afterward with no need to add any moisturizer.  And yes the packaging has that fantastic snap fastening opening to keep the wipes from drying out! 

 Hand and body care

13) Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula Eventone Age Spot Hand Cream (60g) - I loved this rich hand cream and would definitely repurchase for its added SPF protection and skin brightening properties (see my original review here).

14) OPI Original Polish Remover (120ml - 4 fl.oz) - the only usual suspect this month. I average a bottle of this remover a month.

15) Avon Foot Works Cracked Heel Relief Cream (100g) - This humble but wonderful cream prevents my heels from becoming ashy or cracking.  I use it religiously every day during the warmer months and it keeps my heels looking soft and youthful with its concoction of ingredients including glycerin, canola oil(!), lactic acid and stearic acid.  A tube seems to last an eternity too so it's a great value product - although I do tend to snap these up whenever Avon does a 2 for 1 deal!

16) Crabtree & Evelyn Pomegranate, Argan & Grapeseed Deep Cleansing Hand Wash (250ml/8.5fl.oz) - I bought this for the most frivolous reason:  the satiny, ruby red hand wash looked so pretty and I just wanted to display it on my bathroom vanity! Pretty, yes, but also pretty harsh on my skin unfortunately and I found the exfoliating seedy granules a little too deep cleaning for my sensitive skin. I also had a beef with the pump packaging because I couldn't get the last dregs out of the bottle without watering it down. Not a repurchase for me.

Fragrance

17) Prada L'Eau Ambree EDP (80ml/2.7fl.oz) - This smoked glass bottle contained one my favourite scents and I'm sure I'll buy it again as it has such a classic air about it - I keep opening the cap to smell the fragrance as I write this.  The top notes are Cedrat Lemon, Mandarin and Neroli;  middle notes are Benzoin, May Rose and Gardenia; base notes are Amber blended with Patchouli, Vanilla and Opoponax.

My jumbo lipstick pencil collection (NARS, Missha, Models Prefer, Australis)

I have a bit of a 'thing' for jumbo lip pencils.  To some degree I'm sure it's the inner child in me coming out because they remind me of the giant blue pencils I used in the classroom when I was learning to write! But seriously, I love them because they're the perfect two-in-one product for those of us (like me!) who sometimes have trouble colouring within the lines when slicking on the lippy.  I line and colour in with my jumbo pencils and I'm good to go! I have all bases covered with my small collection as I have semi-mattes through to glossies.

Let's have a little look at my collection, plus I've included some swatches of course!

Left to Right:

Models Prefer Lip Gloss Pencil (Drama Queen) - I've raved about the Models Prefer line of jumbo lip gloss pencils before (see my original review here) and I still love them because of their creamy, glide on but incredibly pigmented formula.   Drama Queen is a sparkling raspberry red, and my pick for my Christmas Eve lip.

Missha Soft Crayon Lip Rouge (BE01) - I actually think these pencils are also worthy of a full review because they are also a fantastic product.   The formula is a super soft, creamy velvet which imparts loads of colour.  The result is a sophisticated semi-matte lip look.  These babies also come with their own sharpener included. BE01 is a rich caramel and great for everyday wear, and is an office-appropriate choice. 

NARS Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil (New Lover) - My one luxe jumbo pencil.  I do love this but honestly, I believe the formula is not noticeably better than my lovely drugstore pencils from Models Prefer.  I'm still curious to try NARS' Velvet Matte Lip Pencils based on all their rave reviews but I think I would have to absolutely looooove the shade to justify another Velvet Gloss pencil purchase.  That said, New Lover is indeed a very pretty shade for the summer season as it's a flattering mid-tone pink with a warm shimmer - I'll probably throw this in my bag for my upcoming beach holiday.

Models Prefer Lip Gloss Pencil (Perfectly Polished) - This is the humble pencil that started my love affair with these!  It's no wonder I have more than one and my only wish is that Models Prefer would expand their colour selection.  Perfectly Polished is a golden infused caramel and another easy to wear shade for day or night with its high sheen, non sticky finish.

Australis Show Stopper Gloss Stick (Fairy Floss) - I bought this pencil to add a true pink to my selection but unfortunately this happens to be my least favourite of the lot.  For one, I think the slightly neon candy pink is just a little too pink for me (I keep having visions of neon zinc cream on my lips, which can't be good).  The other issue is the formula is not quite as pigmented as all my other pencils, it applies a little unevenly and also feels sticky.  A bit of a fail for me unfortunately :(

REVIEW: October's farewelled products

It probably sounds crazy but every time I have a few days off from work it seems like I have less time for the quieter pastimes like blogging - there's just way too much other stuff to do with the family!  We're nearing the end of a 4 day long weekend down here, hence my mini absence and the explanation for the lateness of the empties post.  Well, here it is now and I've surprised myself again with the amount of products I managed to finish over the past month...

Skin care

101) Neutrogena Healthy Defence Daily Moisturiser SPF 30+ (40ml)

This is my favourite facial sunscreen because it's light enough to go over my usual moisturiser without leaving my face feeling like an oil slick.  For my original review click here.

102) Maybelline Express Care Eye & Lip Makeup Remover (90ml)

Out of curiousity (and just so I don't rest on my beauty laurels) I'm currently trying out another product but I already know I'll return to this budget makeup remover.  See my original review here. 

103) Avene Eau Thermale Extremely Gentle Cleanser (200ml)

This soothing cleanser saved my skin from burning, raw irritation (here) so I can only sing its praises too.  I would certainly repurchase if my skin has another bout of sensitivity. 

104) Yes To Cucumbers Soothing Hypoallergenic Facial Towelettes (30 towelettes)

While I liked the cucumber and aloe scent I didn't love these wipes as much as I'd expected to because my skin actually felt a slightly tight and tingly after using them and I had to use a night cream afterwards.  I probably won't repurchase.

105) Missha M Signature Real Complete B.B Cream Cleansing Tissue (sample pack)

I have no idea what the ingredients are in these wipes because it's all written in Korean!  Yes, these wipes are made of delicate tissue, rather finer than the usual thicker material and they have a rather unusual, albeit not unpleasant scent about them.  They gently wiped away my makeup and I didn't feel tight after using them so that's a plus.  I have no idea on price etc after searching online so I'm a bit up in the air as to whether I'd actually go to the effort of buying a pack!

Hand and body care

106) OPI Nail Lacquer (Kalahari Khaki)

This was my first ever bottle of OPI polish so I feel a bit sad about getting rid of it.  It was used just about all the way to the bottom of the bottle so I can't complain about that!

107) OPI Original Polish Remover ( 120ml/4fl.oz)

My ninth bottle for the year. 

108) Natio Lavender and Rosemary Hand and Nail Cream (75ml/2.5fl.oz)

Natio is one of my favourite local skin care brands and this product was another winner for me. I loved the natural oil scent of this hand cream and how well it absorbed into my skin.  The 75ml tube is a good size for the handbag too so I would easily repurchase this one!

 

109) L'Occitane Ultra Rich Shower Cream with 5% Shea Butter (250ml/8.4 fl.oz) 

Oh how I looooved this stuff - so divinely creamy on my skin in the shower, and it has that wonderfully slightly nutty scent about it! Damn shame about the price cos I hate the idea of washing $30AUD of product so quickly down the drain.  I tried to make it last as long as possible by alternating with my Cetaphil cleanser so it took me a couple of months to finish, but still I'd hesitate before buying it - until I feel like another skin care splurge anyway (Gah!) 

 

110) Dove Silky Nourishment Body Cream (300ml)

The only criticism I have about this fluffy, instantly absorbed and divinely scented body cream is that it doesn't also come in a tube so it doesn't travel well - a shame because I'd love to take this budget beauty everywhere! A definite repurchase.  My full review is here.  

 

Cosmetics

111) Essence Silky Touch Blush (10 adorable)
I actually finished a blush pan! Woo-hoo! I wore this little blush almost everyday to work because it was such a soft, natural shade for me. It did need a touch up after lunch but for a product which costs a mere few dollars that is not much of a complaint really. The only reason I won't repurchase is I have "magically" accumulated quite a few blushes over the past year or so. For full review and swatches click here.

112) YSL Touche Eclat (Sample)
Using this illuminating concealer again reminded me why I'd used it for so many years - it's actually pretty good as a multi-tasker as it brightened my under eye area and provided enough coverage for areas with light redness. Ultimately the problem is the price - At $55AUD a tube this is enough to pay for three of my Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch highlighting concealers! Granted the Maybelline's not packaged in a gorgeous gilt tube but it-does-the-job. Maybe next time I travel overseas I'll consider the YSL as a duty-free indulgence but for now I'm happy doing without.

 

Fragrance

113) Herve Leger Femme EDP (50ml)
I don't normally buy my fragrance from Avon but this one wasn't too bad, although perhaps a little too sugary sweet for me to wear every day.  It's a woody-floral fragrance with notes of "...Chinese Magnolia, Sicilian pink grapefruit, orange blossom, honeywood, hot benzoin tears (what?!?), cypress and vanilla." In terms of the packaging I do like the bandage bottle design which is synonymous with Herve Leger.

So, that's it for another month of beauty consumption!

Missha: Crystal Nail Polish GPK01

I know some of you requested a swatch of this Missha polish after I recently posted my Missha haul (here) so here's a quick dose of a sparkly pink confection to brighten up the middle of your week :)

I actually wore this hyper-feminine manicure to another beauty blogger lunch last Sunday just for fun as I knew the girls would appreciate it!  Crystal Nail Polish (GPK01) from Korean beauty brand Missha is simply a very dense mix of silver micro-glitter in a medium pink base.  Application was a rather easy two coats with the very wide flat brush and finished with two layers of top coat.  I can see this thirsty glitter could have done with another coat to smooth it over perfectly as the finish was a little bumpy but I like the sugary effect and it gave off some serious sparkle in the sun!

Missha M Shimmer Blending Ball Blusher - No.2 Peach Glow (Review & swatches)

Missha's M Shimmer Blending Ball Blusher captured the most interest of the Missha items I'd recently purchased so by request here are my first impressions - with lots of pictures of course...

This is such a beautifully packaged item and you know that's always going to be a big drawcard for me!  The pretty silver lidded blush pot caught my attention as soon as I saw it in the store.  As you can see in the picture below the lid flips open to reveal an inset mirror and a flat natural bristle brush neatly encased in the top compartment, with the baked blush balls sealed off in the clear plastic container beneath.  I actually feel happier about the container being plastic because there's no fear of the tub shattering on the bathroom floor!

Now let's take a closer look at these gorgeously shimmery blush balls. There's a mix of 5 variations of pink, peach, and gold baked mineral and pearl powder balls which, when swirled together merge into a glowing shade of peach.  Missha says these little balls of colour contain "...11 kinds of flower extracts...to protect skin from oxidation and relax the skin" and the blush is designed to give you an "...elegant and glowing look" as it "lightens up your face".

The five variations up close, nestled gently in my hand - some rolled off and onto the floor after I took the pic but all survived the fall -  disaster averted!

So, I put this to the test and first impressions are good!  Initial arm swatches showed up as a lovely pink-peach blush with a good level of pigmentation and just the barest hint of sparkle in full sun. The colour was easily built up in 2 to 3 swipes...

Swatched heavily on the inside of my arm indoors in shade and direct sunlight:

The ultimate test was in the wearing and this is where I've fallen in love.  I used a stipple brush to swirl the colour onto my cheeks and I was left with a flush of peach and a healthy glow - the multidimensional shimmer means there's no need for highlighter.  Also, the effect is shimmer, not sparkle so it appears as a natural glow.  The lasting time was excellent too - considering I didn't prep or prime, the colour stayed put on my cheeks all day.

And here it is swatched on my bare, unprepped cheeks to show you the glow.  Yes, now I've shown you my bare cheeks - what's next?

 

Yes, I am in love with this blush - it's a little bit of affordable 'luxury'!

Haul post: More from Missha (and a bloggers' swap!)

My backlog of posts keeps building at the moment - this post is about some beauty shopping I did 3 weeks ago!  It doesn't help that life's been a bit hectic lately as well, both at work and home, blah, blah...  Besides product photos I would have liked to include swatches in this post as I'd normally do, but that would mean waiting another week before I'd have the time and the daylight to do it.  What I'm saying is this is going to be a fairly superficial 'show and tell' post so I hope you don't mind - I trust you'll let me know if you want to see swatches or reviews of anything in your comments - Please do!

My first B.B. cream experience: Missha M Perfect Cover B.B. Cream

I've finally jumped on the blemish balm (B.B.) wagon and bought my first tube of B.B. cream about a month ago.  I'd been reading about the now not so new wonder makeup/skincare product for about a year and eventually caved.  I wanted to see whether all the fuss was justified - you know, all those claims about a multi-tasking balm that does everything except actually apply your base for you with its all in one moisturiser, primer, foundation and sunblock formulation!  I'm a lazy person when it comes to base so it makes sense I should try at least one of these.   Better late than never I'm telling myself...

Do not ask me why but I did my research on Wikipedia(!) and discovered the leading brands were Asian brands including Missha, Skin Food, and The Face Shop.  Not for any particular reason I've chosen to try out Missha's version first.

Missha M Perfect Cover BB Cream
 No. 21 (Light Beige)

According to the Missha Australia website M Perfect Cover B.B. Cream is promoted as one of Missha's "best" products.  It "...makes your skin tone clean and natural by concealing blemishes with excellent skin coverage.  It is a multi functional makeup creme with blocking UV rays, whitening and wrinkle care effects and simplifies makeup formalities.  Its moisturized application...makes sleek skin tone while supplying moisture and nutrition at the same time."  Really sounds like it does the lot, doesn't it?

Very simply the B.B. cream is applied after your basic skin care and then set with a dusting of powder.  I've only just started using this product so I haven't used it for long enough to do a full review on the whitening and wrinkle care properties but I thought I'd share my early impressions.

The cream is quite thick and rather scarily grey looking when it's first dispensed and I was a bit afraid the cream would make my skin look grey but it blended out easily and evenly with a completely natural and slightly dewy result.  It's dispensed via a pump top and I've found that one pump is ample to cover my entire face.

I'm lucky that I don't suffer with blemishes but I do have some sunspots on my cheeks I'm self conscious about and I found the B.B. cream significantly reduced their appearance without masking my skin.  It also offers good coverage for my undereye circles so I can skip the concealer there too.  I like the slightly dewy look the B.B cream worn alone gives me but I did find I needed a light dusting of powder to make it last through the day.

I've read some people have experienced reactions to the B.B. cream but I've not had any issues with clogged skin or breakouts so far and I actually found it felt rather more light textured than some other foundations on my skin.  I'm always gonna love skincare with built-in SPF too and this is SPF 42 PA +++.

To finish up here are some quick before and after shots of the cream in action.

Before:  you can see some little sun spots on the back of my hand
and the skin is quite matte and dry

After:  sunspots almost gone, and my skin looks more luminous

(but it still looks like my skin)
