Review: Nude by Nature Pressed Mineral Cover. The 'hard' facts...

I received Nude by Nature's new pressed mineral cover foundation quite some months ago for review and I initially, unconditionally loved it and was set to write a rave review when things started to change...

I sat on my thoughts for a while and then after seeing someone else write their same experience on one of my Instagram posts I decided I should share mine -  you'll see that this isn't going to be a product bashing review but more of conflicted one because this pressed powder foundation is still good but it has one annoying drawback!

Let's start with the good shall we?

Nude by Nature says....
"The Pressed Mineral Cover (10g) is made of an antioxidant-rich, hydrating formula that illuminates the skin with a flawless coverage. Buildable from a medium to full coverage, it instantly minimises the appearance of pores and wrinkles. The powder foundation is composed of performing active natural ingredients, including the native Australian Kakadu Plum, known for its abundant Vitamin C content, and Cehami Extract, to which hydrates and nourishes the skin. The fragrance-free formula also contains Vitamin E, Avocado Oil, Jojoba Oil and Shea Butter to help perfect your complexion.

KEY BENEFITS

Lightweight texture
Buildable from a medium-to-full flawless coverage
Semi-matte finish
Perfectly evens-out the complexion
Instantly minimizes appearance of pores and wrinkles
Controls oil and shine
Long-lasting, up to 8 hours"

My impressions:
Most mineral products are packaged in the potentially messy loose powder form but I like convenience and portability so I'm a fan of this pressed powder version in its slimline packaging. I always like a product that can pop into my makeup bag for easy touch ups!  The compact also comes housed in a matching fabric pouch, with a powder sponge that I admittedly never use as I prefer a brush for buffing in mineral foundation and I always carry a retractable kabuki brush anyway.

As I've mentioned in recent posts I'm becoming more interested in what I'm actually applying to my skin these days so the list of quality natural (and some native) ingredients like Kakadu Plum, Jojoba and Shea Butter that are actually going to do something good for my skin is a definite selling point for me.

As for the coverage itself? It's easily built up by buffing into the skin, resulting in a natural looking finish that doesn't look made up or obviously powdery or cakey so I find that all of the uneven pigmentation and redness in my skin simply buffs away with this mineral cover.  It feels very light and not suffocating in the slightest and because of the moisturizing ingredients it makes my skin look surprisingly almost dewy which is not something most powder foundations do.  As for the 8 hour claims?  The cover lasts well throughout the day without breaking down or creasing around the nose so I'm not rushing off for a midday touch up. The only claim I find I disagree with is "...instantly minimizes appearance of pores" as I do find I still need a bit of help from a primer before applying to minimize any significant pores.

There are five shades ranging from fair to dark - I've personally found it's best to go with a shade lighter than you think you need because these can add quite a bit of depth and warmth to your complexion and can oxidize slightly.  I'm an NC20 (in the old MAC language from my previous life) and currently using Light/Medium although I think Light would be a better shade match for me.

Obviously there's a lot I like about this pressed mineral foundation - to the point that I went and purchased a backup! So far so very good...

Now look below at what happened after I'd been using it for a while. This powder unfortunately formed a stubborn shiny hard pan on its surface making it difficult to pick up product, and that despite daily scraping with a spoolie brush the hard pan reformed again, and again and again...  You might ask:  does trying a scratchy, dense brush help?  Unfortunately no matter what brush I tried, nor how vigorously I swirled that brush into the pan that pesky hard pan would form yet again.

You're probably thinking that I gave up and threw this out but, no, I still loved how it looked on my skin once I could get some out of the pan and I was prepared to scratch up the surface every day if necessary until I finished the entire pan - which I did!

As I mentioned I do have that backup too that I'm currently using, and I'm watching it like a hawk to see how it fares.  If it's just as problematic with forming hard pan then I guess it's back to choosing loose mineral powders for now...

November - December's farewelled products

So here I am doing my blog housekeeping, clearing the backlog starting with my beauty empties from late last year.  Even though I hadn't fully jumped onto the cruelty free commitment at that stage it's interesting to see just how many of these items are cruelty free especially when it came to skin care. For reference I've marked all cruelty free items as CF.

Skin care

130) bareMinerals Instant Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover (47ml/1.5 fl.oz) CF - This is the typical dual-phase remover that I favour although this formula seemed more oily than some I've tried.  I've got a backup because of the handy travel size but other than that I don't think I'd rush to repurchase.

131) Natio Cucumber & Aloe Micellar Cleansing Water (200ml/6.7 fl.oz) CF - I really enjoyed this cleansing water.  No weird smell, no astringent tightness, just clean comfortable skin after using it.

132) Natio Restore Delicate Foam Cleanser For Normal to Dry Skin (100ml/3.4 fl.oz) CF - The consistency of this cleanser made it incredibly hard to squeeze out of the tube.  The product itself was nice (it lathered to a creamy foam that felt rich on the skin) but not enough to make me want to go through the daily struggle of trying to get it out in the first place!

133) Sukin Super Greens Detoxifying Facial Scrub (125ml/4.23 fl.oz)* CF - This creamy scrub was gentle enough to be used every day if I wanted and I really loved the natural cranberry scent.

134) La Clinica Anti Ageing Stem Cell Complex 3 Night Cream (50ml/1.76fl.oz)* CF - This is one heavy-duty night cream that gets to work and leaves me with soft skin the next morning.  It feels very rich on the skin at first yet it penetrates quickly and is not greasy in the slightest. Another plus is there's no distracting scent or perfume which can - surprisingly - be an issue with some night creams out there on the market.

135) L'Oreal Youth Code Luminosity Extraordinary Serum (30ml) - I bought this some time ago because it claims to correct dark spots and illuminate the skin. No dark spot miracles here I'm afraid.  It did illuminate the skin but honestly a good illuminating primer will do the same.  This serum had a lovely texture and delicately luxe scent but I won't be repurchasing because I didn't really notice any lasting benefits and L'Oreal is not a CF brand.

Hand and body care

136) Shore Soap Company Mermaid Kisses Liquid Soap (235ml/8 fl.oz) CF - This can be used as a body wash but I used it as a luxury hand wash in our powder room - to impress the visitors you know!  It has the most delicate yet not overly feminine scent, is really gentle and non-drying on the skin with its aloe-rich formula, yet as my son perfectly puts it: "It really cuts through the grease!"

137) Love Soap Handwash With Organic Lavender & Meadowfoam (200ml) CF -  This is gentle on my eczema-prone hands was a repurchase and I'm likely to buy it again.

138) Miller & Moore Moisturising Shea Butter Hand Cream (65g) - This was gifted to me as part of an older Christmas set.  I was surprised by how well this shea hand cream performed so I used it as my bedside hand pamperer. The Miller & Moore brand is one of those discount supermarket releases and seems to be discontinued so I can't find out much about it and I've got no idea of its CF status -although my guess is it's probably not.

139) Nivea Refreshingly Soft Moisturising Cream (75ml) - I'm sad that Nivea isn't cruelty free because this was a great multi-tasking moisturiser and very handy for throwing into my bag.  I still have several Nivea products so I will continue to use them but won't repurchase unless their CF status changes.

140) Vaseline Intensive Care Spray Moisturiser Dry Skin Repair (190g)* - See my full review here. I really enjoyed the convenience of this moisturiser but unfortunately I won't be repurchasing as Vaseline is not cruelty free.

141) Natio Mineral Body Wash & Polish (210ml/7.1 fl.oz) CF - This is really great soap-free exfoliating body cleanser, scented with orange, peppermint and rosemary so it was a great early morning pick me up.  Unfortunately it's been discontinued!!!

142) Miller & Moore Moisturising Shea Butter Body Scrub (100ml) - This was utterly useless with no scrubbiness at all so I promptly poured it down the drain.

143) SODA & Co Sugar Scrub (Mint Burst 225g)* CF - I loved this concept of a body scrub and moisturiser in one.  If I have one criticism it's that I could easily get through a tub in a single week if I used it every day! Read my original review here.

144) Nivea Stress Protect Clinical Strength Deodorant (40ml)* -  I didn't like the way the dry solid stick dragged across my skin on application and I didn't think this controlled perspiration exceptionally better than my regular choice.

Hair care

145) Original Mineral Conquer Blonde Silver Shampoo (250ml/8.4 fl.oz) CF - I use this salon quality shampoo every other day to tone done brassiness in my hair and I've since repurchased (again).

146) Original Mineral Fine Intellect Conditioner (350ml/11.8fl.oz) CF - Another repurchased hair product because I like a conditioner to "condition" without weighing down my hair.

147) Organix Moisture + Vitamin B5 Shampoo (385ml/13 fl.oz)* - Damn I wish this brand was still cruelty free because this shampoo cleansed my hair without stripping it and it smelt pretty good too.
.
148) John Frieda 7 Day Volume In-Shower Treatment (118ml/4 fl.oz)* -  This treatment is applied after conditioning the hair, left on for a few minutes then rinsed out.  It's supposed to give added volume for up to 7 days but with my daily hair washing it only lasted 2 to 3 washes at best for me and then I had to go back to using my usual thickening sprays.

Cosmetics

149 & 150) Benefit The Porefessional - Yep this really does minimize the appearance of pores and worked well as a smoothing primer but I won't be buying it again because you know...

151) Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion (6ml/.20 fl.oz) CF - This worked really well to control shadows from sliding off my oily eyelids although I'm wondering if I'd prefer a more smoothing formula?

152) Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch Highlighting Concealer (02 Nude) -  This is a long-time favourite that I've repurchased several times - and I still have one more backup - but, alas, it will be the last as Maybelline is not cruelty free.

153) Essence Shimmer Effect Eyeshadow (Cappuccino, Please!) CF - This was a repurchase as this satiny beige was a great dupe for MAC Shroom but unfortunately it's been discontinued.

154) Nude By Nature Pressed Mineral Cover (Medium)* CF - I have mixed feelings about this pressed mineral foundation - I love it for natural looking coverage but I was having issues with hard pan. I have a review in the works so I'll tell you all about it soon.

155) Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter (Berry Smoothie) - This was probably my favourite shade from Revlon's now discontinued Lip Butter line.

156) Chanel Glossimer (119) - This was quite an opaque, lightly shimmery gloss in a MLBB mauve and traveled everywhere with me as a result.

157) MAC Lip Glass (C-Thru) - Milky beige and great worn over a nude lipstick.

158) bareMinerals Marvellous Moxie Lip Gloss (Show Off) CF - I'm having a bit of a love affair with bareMinerals lipsticks at the moment and I didn't mind this lip gloss either! It has a subtle mint scent and has a long-lasting, bleed-proof formula. This particular shade worked perfectly as a topper for my bareMinerals lipstick in the warm pink shade Speak Your Mind so I might consider a repurchase.

Fragrance

159) YSL Black Opium EDP (30ml/1 fl.oz) - I received this bottle as a gift from my husband for Christmas 2014 and as I'd finished this warm gourmand fragrance in record time - and my husband loved me wearing it - I received a backup bottle this Christmas.   The fragrance notes are coffee, pink pepper, orange blossom, jasmine, vanilla, patchouli and cedar. I will be savouring the bottle much longer this time around.

160) Terry de Gunzburg Fruit Defendu EDP (1.5ml/0.05 fl.oz sample) CF - This sweet fruity cocktail smelt like summer to me and is now on my wishlist for a future fragrance splurge. Top notes are bergamot, mango and pineapple; middle notes are turkish rose and pink pepper; base note is white musk.

161) L'Occitane The Vert & Bigarade EDT (7.5ml/0.25 fl.oz) - This was another summer choice as it's a refreshingly green scent.  The opening notes are sparkling citrus in an accord of sweet and bitter orange, while the base includes notes of green tea.

That's 2015 all stitched up! I'm a bit exhausted after going through that lineup so I'm off to have an afternoon lounge out in the yard...

May's farewelled products (and beauty diet update)

I was less voracious about emptying products in May so this will be a reasonably speedy post.  I can practically hear you all heaving a collective sigh of relief...

Skin care

47) Montagne Jeunesse Passion Peel-Off Masque - I enjoy the ease of using a peel-off mask for deep cleaning my skin without needing to wash it all off afterwards and these single use sachets are highly portable and just fun you know?

48) Milk Beauty Wipes (25 wipes) - I discovered these HG beauty wipes last year and I was always going to repurchase. To recap:  these are extra large, alcohol and paraben free, and are heavily textured on one side for exfoliation.

49) Simple Refreshing Facial Wash Gel  (50 ml) - I always say this is a no-frills cleanser, but inevitably and without exception it's the only cleanser I buy for travel. It does the job gently and effectively and the 50ml tube lasts for a good few weeks!

50) Chanel Precision Ultra Correction Lift Eye Cream (2 x 3ml sample tubes) - On the one hand I can't believe these two little tubes got me through a month!  On the other hand...Chanel promises minimized puffiness and dark circles with this cream but seriously I don't know that I noticed any real difference apart from softer skin.  A sensory pleasure only.

Hand and body care

51) Yes to Carrots Hand & Elbow Cream (6.76oz/191g) - I'm sure this gargantuan hand cream has been discontinued because it's no longer on the Y to C website.  I really liked it too although it had an unusual scent which my husband strongly disliked - I had to move it from the bedside table to the office desk where it kept moisturizing my hands for months.

Cosmetics

Now for this month's beauty diet empties.  Anissa and Norlin  are still at it too and another beauty obsessed blogger is about to join our support group very soon.   Now I admit sometimes the beauty diet does get tough going for me with all of those limited edition releases out there (and all those expertly styled pictures on social media) but so far so good!

52) Estee Lauder Crystal Lipstick (Crystal Cherry) - This was a very flattering glossy cherry red lipstick but unfortunately prone to bleeding.  I ended up using it as more of a soft lip stain to make it work for me.

53) Nude by Nature Natural Mineral Cover (Light Skin Tones) - This mineral powder foundation provides a natural looking soft matte coverage but definitely needs a primer to get the best results and longevity of wear.  Once I figured that out I grew to really like it.  Click here for a detailed review.

54) She Pure Magic Primer (30ml) - You know I bought this to wear beneath the Nude by Nature and it's the first primer I've ever tried.  It's a strange mousse textured product but it blended in smoothly to mattify the skin and hold my makeup in place.  I know this sounds contradictory but if I could change one thing it would be to make this perhaps a little more moisturising (I'm guessing?) because I noticed it emphasised dry patches on the tops of my cheeks from time to time. Since I've moved on to another product that hasn't been an issue.

55) Benefit They're Real! Mascara - Mostly this is great stuff! I love the brush because it gets right down into the lashes and the thickening, lengthening and hardwearing formula.  My gripe is this is absolutely hell to take off! Stubborn is the word that comes to mind when I think of this mascara but I still love it anyway.

Culled...

MAC Amplified Lipstick (Molassie) - This brown lipstick has been sitting in my cupboard for years and I've finally let it go. I don't know how I got talked into buying this but I bought brown - and such a caca brown at that - because it never worked for me.  A brown lip hasn't worked for me since the '90's!  I've even toyed with the idea of using this as a cream contouring product but then I decided I'm not prepared to work that hard and admit defeat.  This is much better put to use as a Back 2 MAC swap for a more flattering lipstick!

Until next month's empties!

TAG: 5-product face!

I was tagged by wonderful blogger friend Larie of Eye Heart It fame to create a look with just five products!

You know, I thought this would be easy but then I realized - Hang on! - I need to show this face, it's not just me heading out to the post box so I do need to look presentable.  I'm pretty minimalist on weekends but even without doing the mental arithmetic I'm sure it would normally involve (slightly) more than five.  Never let it be said that I back away from a beauty blogger challenge though.  Let's get into it!

I'll tackle the products in the order I'd use them, which is my own slightly non-conformist order:  eyes, base, cheeks then finally lips.  I've adopted the habit of doing my eyes first so I can deal with any fallout without needing to reapply base products.

  1. The easiest way for me accentuate my eyes is with a "standalone" eye shadow swept over the lids, so for a natural but slightly shimmery option I chose Maybelline Silken Taupe to give my eyes some light and depth.  (Click here for my other standalone eyeshadow picks.)
  2. After that I decided some serious lashes were in order so I picked Benefit They're Real! I've only recently started using this much raved about mascara and it does a great job of thickening lashes without clumping.  That's it - eyes are done!
  3. I simply can't go without concealer so that was always going to be one my five products.  Without the option of using primer I opted for my concealer to work even harder than usual as a multi-tasker.  I applied Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer not just to cover my under eye circles, but also down the bridge and sides of my nose, and the middle of my forehead to act as a brightener and "primer".
  4. If I wear cream or liquid base I also need a powder to finish over the top so I opted for mineral powder foundation Nude By Nature for matte coverage and eliminate the extra step.  I find this mineral foundation does need a primer to make it last, particularly on oilier parts of the face such as the nose, so that's why the concealer beneath!
  5. Finally I chose Becca Watermelon Beach Tint for my lips and cheeks to complete the natural look I was aiming for.  Just to make sure the tint stayed in place on my cheeks I applied it first underneath then again over my powder foundation.

So that's the list.  And this is the subtle result:

Feel free to play this tag - just link back and let me know what your five-product face looks like!

Until next time.

REVIEW: Nude by Nature Natural Mineral Cover

The Nude by Nature range of mineral makeup products has been spruiked on Australian television for a few years now and I'm sure lots of you Australian readers have flirted with the Nude range.  I'm not always quick to jump onto trends (and clearly I'm way behind the pack here) but this was my first experience with their Natural Mineral Cover.  So, why not share my impressions anyway?  These are the impressions of an NC20 coloured, combination skinned, mildly pigmented middle aged female...

Firstly here are the claims as directly quoted from Nude's website:

"...Taking the concept of minerals to the next level, we took out the bismuth, that can irritate sensitive skin and appear cakey on the skin, and left only the ingredients that help to create the perfect, flawless, airbrushed complexion, NATURALLY!..."

"...Remarkably enhance and even out your natural skin-tone with a swirl of Natural Mineral Cover. This genius formulation is sure to impress when it covers redness, enlarged pores and birthmarks and is so gentle you can even use it on rosacea!"

"The beauty of this product is its ability to look like skin, not powder, with Kaolin Clay included, this Natural Mineral Cover allows it to mould easily with the natural oils in your skin. With no talcs, parabens and bismuth, you have a product that not only works, but is perfect for the most sensitive of skins.
It also contains SPF 15 ensuring you’re protected from the harsh damaging rays of the Australian sun."

There's absolutely no denying this is a fantastically gentle product and free from many nasties which can irritate sensitive skin but did I achieve that "...perfect, flawless, airbrushed complexion" that I crave?

I've definitely been spoiled by the full coverage mineral makeup I've used in the past so my standards were set at a certain high-ish level.  I expected flawless, luminous coverage, and longevity of wear - and I've come to expect that kind of cover over bare (read:  moisturised but otherwise unprimed) skin.  Firstly I tried brushing this loose powder over bare skin and I found the coverage to be quite sheer, although I was able to build it to a medium coverage with repeated applications.  Whilst it did look natural I found I missed the glow I've become accustomed to, which is possibly due to the lack of boron nitrate - I'm no mineral scientist - I just did a direct comparison of ingredient lists and found the luminosity was attributed to boron nitrate in the other product.  Finally, the coverage disappeared from my t-zone all too quickly so I needed powder touch-ups throughout the day to cover my shiny and glowing nose.

The good news is - ta-dah! - worn over primer the intensity and longevity of coverage was improved significantly so it lasted all day and into the evening.  Yes, I finally caved and introduced primer into my makeup repertoire which I didn't plan on having to do so that was a bit of a disappointment.  The other disappointment was the definite lack of luminosity but I suppose that is a matter of personal preference.  You're either going to go for the glow or the matte.

Pros:
  • Does not contain bismuth, talc or parabens
  • Suitable for extremely sensitive skin
  • Buildable coverage
  • Non-cakey finish
  • Creates a soft matte finish
  • Non-mess packaging
  • Contains SPF15
  • Available in 5 shades - Fair, Light, Light / Medium, Medium & Dark
Cons:
  •  Requires primer to maximize coverage and wear time
  •  Lacks the luminosity of some other mineral makeup brands

Would I buy this again?
I admit I'm enjoying wearing this product more now that I've introduced primer but I do miss my dewy glow.  This isn't a holy grail product for me so I know I'll be back out there on my journey looking for the next best thing in mineral makeup once I finish this pot.

Until next time,

Haul post: More from Missha (and a bloggers' swap!)

Hi :)

My backlog of posts keeps building at the moment - this post is about some beauty shopping I did 3 weeks ago!  It doesn't help that life's been a bit hectic lately as well, both at work and home, blah, blah...  Besides product photos I would have liked to include swatches in this post as I'd normally do, but that would mean waiting another week before I'd have the time and the daylight to do it.  What I'm saying is this is going to be a fairly superficial 'show and tell' post so I hope you don't mind - I trust you'll let me know if you want to see swatches or reviews of anything in your comments - Please do!

So...after catching up with three other lovely Melbourne bloggers (Norlin, Ling and another Ling!) some THREE weeks ago for a dumpling lunch and a beauty product swap we headed to the Missha boutique for a bit of swatching and spending.  Here's the entire beauty booty I took away with me:  blush, lip products and of course a few more bottles of polish!

Right - let me quickly go through the inventory with a closer look at the individual items...

Nail polish L - R:
Crystal Nail Polish - GPK01
Lucid Nail Polish - PK04

Lip products:
Glam Fit Gloss - WN01
Soft Crayon Lip Rouge (with sharpener) - BE01

 L - R:
Lip Rouge - BE01
Gloss - WN01

Shimmer Blending Ball Blusher - No.2 Peach Glow

The Missha sales assistants were lovely, very patient with us and, as it turns out, also very generous!  Look at the ridiculous number of samples they threw in for me.  No, they didn't (and still don't) know I'm a beauty blogger - perhaps they can see I'm going to be a very good customer...

Sample list clockwise from bottom left:
Super Aqua Marine Forest Revitalizing Emulsion
BB Boomer - BB Boosting Cream
Perfect Cover BB Cream (I already have and love this!)
Super Aqua Marine Forest Lifting Serum
Signature Radiance Pore Primer
Signature Real Complete BB Cream

Now, I did mention a product swap.  I'd brought a bag of stuff to swap and was hoping to come home with less than I'd given away but somehow I managed to score all of these lovely things - again I must say thank you to these wonderful girls because I really feel well and truly spoilt with all of this...

Swap goodies clockwise from left:
Trilogy Sensitive Skin Very Gentle Calming Fluid
Gaia Pink Grapefruit & Jasmine Foaming Cleanser
Darling Nail Polish - Discotheque (Glitter baby yeah!!!!)

Vita :)
