Rimmel Velvet Matte Nail Colours: Sumptuous Red and Midnight Kiss

Being mad for all things matte I rushed out and bought these new Rimmel Velvet Matte polishes as soon as I saw them on the stand - the colours, the velvet matte finish...What's not to love, right?  It turns out there was plenty on this occasion unfortunately but let's start with the good...

What's good?  The colours themselves are exactly what I'd choose to wear as a matte mani - Sumptuous Red (which is actually a deep plum) and Midnight Kiss (deep midnight blue) are beautiful in the bottle and do look lovely and velvety once on the nails.  On this occasion I couldn't decide which colour to wear first so I opted for both.

What's disappointing? A few things actually. Firstly, I had major issues colouring within the lines because the brushes were unevenly cut so I was just about holding my breath trying to control the colour placement. Yep, unless it was just me being unlucky scoring bad brushes I'm warning you to be prepared for clean up!  And...these polishes are a one-day wonder when it comes to durability.  I experienced chipping within 24 hours, and the matte finish started to wear off after a few days so it evolved into a semi shiny finish.  For that reason this polish is for special occasions only...

Have you tried these? I'd be interested to hear other impressions on these polishes.

  1. Such a shame on the brush and the durability front but the colors are so stunning Vita. The the blue !

    1. Yeah it's doubly disappointing given the colours are so lovely. I want to wear the blue again on its own but I don't think even I can handle a manicure that starts self-destructing within a day :(

  2. There are no mattes that last for long, so I just take it as it comes. It's offset by the fact that they dry faster, so I kind of like the fast, low commitment process sometimes. The burgundy shade is beautiful and now you've reminded me to double my polish size by trying to mattify everything!

    1. Serves me right for trying to get this to last from Monday to Friday! Impossible! I need to try my OPI matte top coat over another of my regular polishes to see if it actually reduces the wear time - time for some experimentation!

  3. I think matte nails are way too high-mainty for me personally, and I doubt with my shoddy nails this would even last past lunchtime! I think I have a matte topcoat though, so if it ever tickles my fancy I can whip up a matte nail look with a shade I already have in my stash. I much prefer the matte Provocalips from this lot over the nail shades, lovely as they are!

    1. Oh I guess they'd still be great for a party manicure - a one night only prospect though!
